German School Washington, D.C. to Celebrate World Book Day 2009 with Diplomats and International Authors
Potomac, Md. – Kristina Henry author of the beloved “Sam: The Tale of a Chesapeake Bay Rockfish”, a morsel-loving and carefree creature, who has captured the imaginations of young children across the country will visit the German School’s elementary school on Thursday, April 23, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. to celebrate World Book Day with the school’s younger students. Henry, a Vienna, Va. native who now works in Easton, Md., will read from her popular book, answer questions about Sam and the Chesapeake Bay, and autograph previously purchased copies. Andrea Schrammel from the Austrian Embassy’s Cultural Forum will officially open the elementary school’s World Book Day at 9:30 am.
The author was invited by the elementary school as the highlight of a series of events that revolve around children’s books and the importance of reading. Other fun activities include puzzles and games, a book flea market and a film presentation about whales.
Simultaneously, the upper school will host renowned Abraham Lincoln historian Dr. Ronald D. Gerste who will read from his latest book “Abraham Lincoln – The Founder of Modern America.” Gerste has written extensively about a variety of topics, including U.S. First Ladies and British Queens Victoria and Elizabeth II.
During the afternoon, Christiane Feller will introduce “Citizen Country – Germans Show Their America,” a book she co-authored with German news magazine “Stern” journalist and U.S. correspondent Katja Gloger about Germans’ experiences in and views of the United States. Elke Wienkamp from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany’s Cultural Department was instrumental in arranging Feller’s visit, and she will officially represent the Embassy at this event.
Each year, the German School hosts a popular author and organizes various reading- and book-related events to encourage children to read and discover the magical world hidden inside the pages of a book. Previous guests included Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, the author of “Shiloh”, Swiss writer Brigitte Schär, and Andrea Pabel whose horse and pony tales are popular in many different countries.
