Computer Science Competition

The computer science competition “Biber” designed to encourage digital thinking is the largest computer science competition in Germany. On the Biber website the manager of the Germany-wide computer science competitions (BWINF), Wolfgang Pohl, says that digital thinking becomes more and more important for active participation in the digital society. Biber allows for a large amount of students to participate and gives teachers, parents and also the students themselves an insight into their strengths. He adds that talents can be detected and developed early on.

During the 2016/17 school year, around 290,000 students participated at German Schools in Germany, in North and South America, in Asia, Africa and Europe. The DSW participated in grades 7 through 9. Hauke K. and Paul H. of the 7a won the 1st place in the competition level for grades 7/8. Lea K. and Kim O. of the 9a made 2nd place in their competition level for grade 9/10. In the picture above you can see the four students with their computer science teacher Bohdan Zemek.

The organizer of the computer science competition “Biber” is the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI), the Fraunhofer-Verbund IUK-Technologie and the Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik; and it is supported by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. The official website is at: http://www.informatik-biber.de/
