GER Business Award 2014

Tenth-graders at the German School competed for the GER Business Award by the German Executive Roundtable on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 presenting business plans for fictitious companies to a panel of seven German-speaking trade and industry representatives.

With their enterprise called “La Tienne”, Angeliki A., Viktoria B., Laura K., and Helena R., won the first prize of $1,200. The four girls developed a website which allows customers to design individualized pieces of jewelry and have them delivered to their home.

Second place and $500 went to the project ESoNet. The four team members Cynthia H., Finia K., Natalia P.and Henriette W. invented an online chat portal in which language learners can directly communicate with native speakers to improve their language as well as intercultural skills.

Team PetDream Inn with Niko B., Teresa M., Jennifer N., Sebastian R. and Leon R. won $300 in third place for an app which provides dog owners peace of mind while vacationing. By downloading the app, pet owners can connect to a webcam at the PetDream Inn and check in on their pets regularly to make sure they are taken care of.

The judges evaluated the business plans of the eight teams based on their economic soundness and the professional quality of their presentation.

“The quality of the team’s presentations and business plans were outstanding this year. All students involved have made an exceptional effort and have set a very high standard for future projects”, said Uli Werner of EDC Consulting and GER Chairman.

“All participants are winners. I could not be more pleased with the effort and dedication that has gone into this competition”, said Markus Lammes, teacher and organizer of the competition.

The GER Business Award was first awarded in 2008. Its goal is to encourage entrepreneurial thinking among teenagers. Each year, several teams of 10th-graders participate by developing an idea for a fictitious business and a professional business plan throughout the course of the school year.
