On Wednesday, January 15, 2014 the German School got a special musical treat. The German a cappella band Maybebop visited us on their U.S. tour. Maybebop distinguish themselves through perfect imitations of diverse musical instruments and perfect vocals in ever-changing genres. An ability that the four young men wanted to share with our students. In several workshops, they taught excited students different vocal techniques and gave advice on how to improve stage presence. Afterwards, these students had the unique opportunity to demonstrate their newly acquired skills in front of their fellow students and teachers in a lunch time concert. Particularly, the interpretation of the classic “School’s out” – a worldwide student favorite – led to an outburst of enthusiasm among spectators.

The highlight of the day followed in the evening when Maybebop took the stage in front of the wider school community. The audience was astonished by the witty combination of vocals and comedy. With cleverly self-composed songs and well-known cover versions of, for example, “Smells like teen spirit” or “You can call me Al”, Maybebop blew away the audience. The crowd’s reaction was euphoric when Maybebop spontaneously composed a new song based on guests’ suggestions for a musical genre and five randomly picked words. The band magically came up with a new song unique to the DSW audience. With that, a day full of music at our school came to an end but certainly the catchy tunes will carry on for a very long time.

A big Thank-You to the Friends of the German School who sponsored this event.
