United Nations World Food Programme
In Mrs. Monnett’s Advanced 3rd Gade English class, students had been reading a Washington Kids Post article called “These Students are Hungry to Help”. The article explained how students, at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Arlington, harvested food from their school’s gardens to help feed families in need who live in their communities. The article referenced various agencies that also help feeding those in need, including the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The father of one of the students, Mr. Deringer, used to work with the WFP, headquartered in Rome, Italy. He came and gave a special lecture and presentation about the program. He brought hands-on items to class such as food bags and meal cups to let the third graders learn first-hand more about his work. The students learned a lot, and were actively engaged in the presentation.
Thank you Mr. Deringer for your visit and for deepening our understanding of the important work of the WFP!
