Philosophy of the Sports Department

Athletic participation is an important part of the overall program at the German School of Washington. Whether the student wishes to compete against other Washington Area schools or participate in the variety of AG’s provided during the school day, our students are encouraged to promote such values as determination, cooperation, respect, and fairness. The Sports program at the German School is considered to be an extension of the education process that has been found to be greatly needed and appreciated by the students that participate. Over the years, our students have noticed they can push themselves in pursuit of individual goals, grow significant and enduring associations with their fellow students and adults, work toward team goals and undertake some of life’s challenges through the support of the family, friends and alumni.  All coaches, players and fans are expected to represent the DSW with dignity and class. Respect for officials and opponents through constant attention to the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play demonstrates our quest to win a game but not through the points scored. We are hopeful that all of this accomplishes without compromise a primary goal of the Department to have fun while playing sports. Some of our students prefer to participate in many of the AG’s provided during the school day. These activities like our teams, are designed to promote development of moral quality and honesty through participation of the activity. The German School embraces a general attitude of “sound mind” and “sound body” and all of our students are encouraged to establish a lifetime obligation to physical health and fitness.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our next game in the coming seasons. Go Griffins!

 Sincerely,

 Jan Apel

Director of Sports
